All five shows are multiple Tony Award winners, and each will be locally produced with Broadway artists working hand-in-hand with talented Midwesterners, selected in a nation-wide talent search to be held in March of 2009.
Two classic shows (not seen at MTWichita for more than 20 years) have been confirmed for the 2009 season, and they are CAMELOT (last produced in 1988) and KISS ME, KATE (not done since 1978). This will mark the professional area locally of the 1999 revised Broadway version of KISS ME, KATE.
Two new-to-MTWichita titles are the magnificent MISS SAIGON (from the authors of LES MISERABLES) and Mel Brooks’ zany extravaganza THE PRODUCERS.
The fifth show of the regular season is the Wichita premiere of the recent Broadway hit THE DROWSY CHAPERONE. The delightful story revolves around a collector of Broadway cast albums who invites you, the audience, into his little rent-controlled apartment. When he puts on a record ("Remember records?" he asks), his favorite show, a 1928 trifle called "The Drowsy Chaperone" magically comes to life in his apartment. Since I have been Wichita's resident cast-album-nut for my 21 years here, it seems only appropriate that I portray this whimsical character!
For the first time ever, we're adding a sixth show to the lineup, not part of the five-show subscription series, but seats for this will be made first available to subscribers. We are very, very excited that the Disney Company has selected MTWichita for the regional premiere of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2: On Stage!, and just as we did with the first HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, we'll use this as a showcase for dozens of incredible local talents.
